Join us at the Royal Automobile Club on Thursday 27th November 2025 for the London Dinner!

This year’s London Dinner will take place at The Royal Automobile Club on Thursday 27th November 2025. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased on this page. Complimentary Cobra Beer will be served from 6.15pm, with dinner served at 7.45pm. There are reduced ticket prices for recent graduates and residents. Please see below for more information on our speaker and Chairman. We look forward to seeing you at the RAC!

Our speaker, Andy Macdonald (Hughes Hall, CURUFC, 1989), is a former Scotland rugby international and Cambridge Blue. He has played for the Barbarians and Southland Province in New Zealand. He was first capped against the All Blacks in 1993.

Andy is from Nairn. He went to Gordonstoun School before attending Loughborough University, Penn State University and subsequently going on to gain his master’s degree from Cambridge in 1990. A career as a Chartered Surveyor in Edinburgh followed where he played rugby for Heriots FP, before moving south to Warwickshire where he now lives.

Andy now runs his own property development company, Swanvale Developments. He is heavily involved with a children’s charity, Duchenne UK. Since 2016 he has co-organised a charity cycle event with his late friend and fellow Hawk and Cambridge Blue, Alasdair Robertson, called the Duchenne DashMAX including a number of ex-international sportsmen and Olympic medallists riding across the UK and France.  The event has raised nearly £1M for Duchenne UK, a leading funder of research into treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Andy is an ambassador for the Chaffinch Trust, which fosters collaboration amongst organisations to develop initiatives and projects that support and encourage those living in areas of disadvantage.

Our chairman, Trevor Borthwick (Magdalene, CURUFC, 1981-1985), graduated in law and history in 1984 before going on to gain an LLM in 1985. He represented the LX Club against Oxford in 1982, 1983 and 1984 before winning his rugby Blue in 1985. He represented Sussex rugby against Canada and, after leaving Cambridge, combined his early career as a lawyer at Allen & Overy (now A&O Shearman) with playing rugby for London Scottish reaching the semi-final of the John Player Cup (as it was then) in 1989. He was selected for the Anglo Scots squad that defeated France in 1989.

Trevor became a partner at Allen & Overy in 1997 and enjoyed a 33-year career at the firm, becoming Global Head of General Lending, before moving to Mayer Brown as a partner for the final three years of his career as a lawyer. He now works part time as a consultant in West Sussex where he lives with his wife and their three children. In his spare time, he enjoys trying to improve his golf and tennis.

Trevor is a member of the President’s Circle of CURUFC and served on the advisory board for the Club’s 150th anniversary fundraising.
