Committee Manifestos

Frederick Burdon (CURUFC)

Hawks, representing you as a member of the new committee would be a privilege and something I'd really enjoy. I would do my best to uphold the traditions of the club through trying to be a good club and sportsman. I would aim to represent the views of resident Hawks and help the new President and Secretary in any way I could to benefit the club.

Alexander Cheetham (CURUFC)

One of the best parts of playing rugby for the Blues this year was the chance it gave me to get involved with a completely new team and get to know a group of guys from outside the John’s bubble. The Hawks’ club was the backdrop to a large part of the team’s socialising and provided lots of great memories. Just last week the club gave me the opportunity to fulfil my lifelong dream of dry humping and getting choked by a Welsh and Lions international rugby player in Cindies. In my final year I would love the opportunity to give something back to University sport and ensure other people get as much out of it as I have. Being on the Hawks’ Committee would provide a great opportunity to get involved with a full range of sports at a University I am proud to represent. The Hawks club has a fantastic heritage and tradition and I would relish the chance to become further involved by standing on the Committee. If elected I would work hard to support the club President and promote the Hawks’, trying to get as many people as possible involved in the club and its various events. From experience I know that there are people eligible for membership, who are not always fully aware of how to apply and I would be keen to extend the club’s reach to as many university sportsman as possible. The introduction of a slave auction or Miss Hawks event at, for example, Cindies or Life might be a great way to exploit the Hawks’ pre-existing popularity with the female population of Cambridge, as well as adding to the club’s bank account. Part of my motivation for staying for an extra year in Cambridge was to further my involvement in University sport, and being a part of the Hawks’ committee would be a fantastic way to achieve this.

Henry Day (CURA)

I would like to stand on the Hawks committee to increase the range of sports represented. I am very happy with the way the Hawks' is run at the moment, I think Karen and Mike do a fantastic job and Karen never fails to impress me with the huge amount of good quality food she is able to produce all by herself. I and the rest of the shooters are regular customers of the Hawks, always doing well in the Tomahawk tally despite having relatively few members. The club is and should remain a traditional gentleman's club, a refuge for its members to relax and have fun to escape the pressures of Cambridge Life.

Charles Dewhurst (CUCC/CUGC/CURFC)

Sport has been a fundamental part of my life during my two years at Cambridge, and I count my Full Blue in golf, Half Blue in rugby fives and Crusaders Colours in cricket as the accomplishments of which I’m most proud. Golf is my real passion, and as such I have been actively involved in the CUGC since starting university. To this point, I was the first-ever Stymies Captain (seconds) to serve as Captain in their first undergraduate year, which speaks to my natural capacity for administration and responsibility, even as an 18 year old. This season I have been heavily involved in the CUGC as Social Secretary, and have helped the club rediscover the Tomahawk-drinking form that saw it become Team of the Year in 2008. This role has involved much interaction with the Hawks Club, exemplified by countless dinners in the dining room and even more emails to Sarah (the administrator) to organise them. In light of my track record, I think I would be a valuable member of the Hawks Junior Committee: I am responsible, dependable and efficient, and there are few people in Cambridge more dedicated to University Sport than myself. I want to spread this enthusiasm within the club, making it a welcoming refuge for people of all sporting backgrounds. Additionally, the Hawks Club has already provided me with many happy memories, and I would feel proud and privileged to be able to give my time to serve such a fantastic institution, and its equally esteemed members

Jamie Gilbert (CURUFC/CUSSC)

Having been a Hawk for the past 2 years, I really want to give something back to the club. Coming into my final (masters) year of Engineering, this is the right time for me to do it.

I feel I have the necessary experience to add value to the committee, being a current member of the General Committee of the Rugby Union Football Club, as Blues Secretary, and previously as President of the University Ski and Snowboard Club.

In my year on the committee I would certainly try to help push the sports centre forward, building on the great work already done. I would also like to see the Hawks used as more of a resource for networking between the different clubs, in particular for the better sharing of facilities, hopefully leading to better access for all clubs to training and playing facilities.

Stuart Jackson (CUHC)

Fellow Hawks,

I am very proud to have been a member of the Club throughout my time as an undergraduate, and feel very fortunate to have been part of a motivated and successful Junior Committee over the past year. I believe the atmosphere of the Club to be unique within the University, with so many sports coming together in such a sociable spirit under one roof, and I have many fond memories of nights behind the bar. I would be very grateful if you would consider re-electing me to be part of next year’s Committee where I would look to provide continuity between the great work done by Pat and Benoit and the Presidency of either Ian or Hardy, both of whom, I have no doubt, will uphold the outstanding reputation of the Hawks’ Club. I hope that you will consider me again for this role as I would relish the chance to continue the fine traditions of the Club in promoting Men’s sport in Cambridge, and providing a social centre for all of our Men’s teams, either from behind the clubhouse bar, or in organising the Club events.

Stuart Lee (CUBbC)

As a Hawk of two years, I have always enjoyed visiting the clubhouse and spending time with my team mates and fellow Hawks in the bar. Having served on the CUBbC (Basketball) committee as secretary and then as president, I am excited about the prospect of sitting on the 2010-11 Hawks committee. For me, serving on the committee means that I can give something back to the club. To do this, I will help contribute towards the smooth functioning of the club and promote the various Hawks events. I would also like to further the efforts put into the University Sports Centre campaign. Above all else, I will work closely with other committee members to continue the proud Hawks tradition. GDBO.

Benjamin Maidment (CURUFC)

I am currently in 2nd year studying Land Economy at St Edmund's. The Hawks’ Club has provided me with some great moments in my first year at Cambridge, particularly after the victory at Twickenham in December and the unique atmosphere it provides makes it the perfect location to socialise and get on it with mates. Being on the committee would enable me to help give something back to a club which has offered me a lot already. If I were on the committee I would strive to ensure the unique atmosphere is preserved, giving the opportunity for residents to watch sport, eat good food and drink together.

Nicholas Parkes (CUHC)

I would like to be on the Hawks' committee because I want to become more involved with the Hawks' club. I think that the Hawks' club is a fantastic beacon for Cambridge sport, and so I'd like to have a part in helping to run it. The Hawks' club does so much to promote sport at Cambridge, and If I were to be elected to the committee I would help ensure that this continues. Many Cambridge sports are in dire need of new facilities, and I want to be a part of the push to improve these. Overall, I think that I would make an excellent committee member, and I would be honoured to be elected.

Samuel Spurrell (CULC)

I have proven myself able to lead successfully and work as part of a dedicated Committee: I captained the Blues Lacrosse team to Varsity success this year and I Co-Captained the Southern Universities Lacrosse Team at the British National Championships at the beginning of May. I have been responsible for co-ordination of the entire Lacrosse Club, resulting in one of the most successful seasons the club has ever had; winning Varsity, finishing top of our league and raising the profile of Lacrosse in Cambridge.

I am a keen supporter of the Hawks club both financially and socially; contributing to the Lacrosse team winning the Tomahawk Race for a second year in a row.

I'm 100% committed to maintaining the good name of the Hawks Club in the wider world and I'd love the opportunity to put these skills to use in the development of the Hawks Club next year.

James Strawson (CUBC)

Having been a Hawk for nearly three years now, I have seen how great the club can be for so many people, for so many different reasons. Having previously spent two years rowing with CUBC, I took the opportunity this year to get involved in some of the other great sports clubs Cambridge has to offer; CUAC, CUSWPC as well as a whole range of college sports. This gave me the opportunity to meet Hawks from a variety from a load of different backgrounds, something I hope to continue to do next year whilst on the Hawks' Committee. We truly are a great bunch of guys who are brought together by this club. I couple of years ago whilst writing to support a friend’s application to be an honorary Hawk, I wrote "The Hawks’ club is a spiritual home for Cambridge sportsmen, past and present." I hope to play a small part in ensuring that this long continues.

Humphrey Waddington (CUAC)

I was asked of my membership of Hawks' in a recent job interview: “are you an elitist?”. I replied, “yes”. The Hawks' Club is a members only establishment based on a meritocracy of sporting performance, and it is therefore a great honour to call myself a member. I had the pleasure of serving on Committee two years ago, a desire that was realised after spending many happy nights in this inspiring Club since my first term in Cambridge. As a result of my previous experience in helping to organise the busy schedule of Hawks’ Club social events, developing new cocktails for the bar, and promoting Cambridge sport and the Hawks’ Club to the wider University population, I believe that I am a good candidate to serve once again on Committee. I believe that I know how the Club functions both socially and economically as well as anyone currently in residence, and I hope that those who remember me do so as an approachable barman who can listen to, and support resident Hawks in any matters that cause them concern.

If I were lucky enough to be elected to Committee again, I promise to improve the Club in ways identified by you – the residents. Many of you realise how much I love the Hawks’ Club and I will do everything possible to ensure that it continues functioning in the fashion it has done for many years – unashamedly elite and a place to go to for happy times. We are the University’s finest sportsmen, and I firmly believe we deserve the finest Club in Cambridge in reward for our sporting endeavour. GDBO.

Maximillian Wolke (CUAFC)

I'm organised, enthusiastic and co-operative; ask any of CUAFC teammates and they will tell you that I always offer to help anyone out with organisational matters, admin or simply if they have a bit too much on their plate. I have noticed that only a very low proportion of Cambridge Footballers convert their sporting achievements into Hawks membership. In the current squad there are at least 15 lads who would be eligible but simply haven't been prompted to fill in an application. I think having a footballer on the committee would help to address this particular problem but also build a closer relationship between the two clubs. Following on from this, the CUAFC President, Dr John Little, has a number of useful contacts at the Football Association which to date have been largely unexploited. At the recent residents drinks we were lucky enough to hear Jamie Roberts speak, I don't see why we shouldn't be able to get important figures from the football establishment to share their experiences- the contacts are there but they need someone to chase them up and enthuse some ideas.  I would make this one of my key objectives. If you want to know more about my credentials just drop me an e-mail, as I said at the start I'm new to the club, but I believe that having someone with a fresh perspective will contribute a good balance to next year's committee.
